Historic Win for Zambia

A big congratulations to Zambia who clinched the African cup of nations after a hard won victory against Ivory Coast on Sunday. The copper bullets, or Chipolopolo, as the national team is called, beat favourites Ivory Coast 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shoot out in Libreville, Gabon.

Their historical win was particularly significant because 19 years ago their national team was wiped out when their plane crashed into the ocean near Libreville. Goal keeper, Kennedy Mweene told reporters, "The players who were killed in the plane crash in Gabon was what behind us and what was driving us through the tournament."

Thousands of Zambians have taken a day off work to celebrate their good fortune. Way to go people, more grease to your elbows.

  1. I really enjoyed the African cup of nations for the first time in many years because Nigeria did not qualify for it and so I did not watch the matches with my BP going high.

I decided to support Chipolopolo for three reasons: 1. They were the underdogs according to one Super Sports - 9 commentator, 2. I like the name Chipolopolo and 3. They played as a team, no single super star - it was like David vs Golliat.

Congrats to all Zambians but wait a minute, did I see ex- president Kenneth Kauda in the stadium?

  2. Prof G, I'm laughing out loud. It's good to watch without the pressure of your country participating, even though it is a shame that Nigeria did not qualify.

Yes, a big congrats to all Zambians. They deserve to let their hair down & celebrate. Thanks for your comment. (Oluchi Ugwu)

  4. Wow the picture of one white face (the coach)surrounded by other black faces and they altogether seem to be fully enjoying this victory is really good.
It is still possible to step out of our externalities and aim at achieving goals and objectives that unite us as people
