Guess the Time and Place

A while back - I won't mention when exactly - I posted some amazing photos from around the world from a certain century. Here's a second set of photos without the captions or any explanations. I'd like you to have a crack at naming the country, century and if possible the people or event the photograph is portraying. Bon chance - good luck!

Dahomey - Now Benin

England

  2. This is a hard nut to crack. Okay, let me try: the first pix is somewhere in West Africa, the second one is taken immediately after the Second World War (I don't know the region or country) and the last one is in England. Score me, Oluchi...

    1. Strong Self, I must say I am impressed. Yes, the first pic is in West Africa. Can you have a go at guessing the country? Yes, you are almost spot on about the Second World War...it is actually First World War - can you guess the country and who the people are? How did you know it is England? Did 'Angleterre' give it away? I'm highly impressed. Well done, you score 9/10.

  3. Mmmm... this is a good one. Having had some help from strong self (thanks) Let me try going a step further. The cowtails held in the hand of the men traditionally signifies welcome or saying goodbye, or showing reverence. So based on your former strories I am guessing that it is a picture of men in Congo asked to welcome the first white photographer.

  4. The idea that I have for the second picture is that it represents French nurses treating German (Nazi) soldiers after or during the second world war. So the century is twentieth century (1900-)
For the third picture my guess is that it was taken in Netherlands in the 19th century (1800-). One of the first coloured pictures?
For the first picture, I am placing the timing as 18th century (1700-).
Well, what's the score? 0/3? I can wait for all the comments to come in so as not to spoil the show.

  5. Dlaw, that's a very very good attempt. Yes! As the place written by the side of the photo shows, it is in Somme, northern France. There are two flags behind. One is Swiss (white with red cross), the other is French. The battle of Somme took place in 1916 & was one of the biggest wars of the world war. Well done. Over all, you scored 6/10. Thanks for your comment.
