Today (Monday 23rd January) marks the beginning of the Chinese new year. On the Chinese calendar, 2012 - known as the year of the dragon - is the year 4709.
The Chinese calendar predates the International Calendar. Originally the holiday was a time to honour household gods, deities and ancestors.
Our date is 2012 AD, which is referenced to Jesus Christ; when did the Chinese start their own date?

It's crazy 'cos it is difficult to find a coherent account of the chinese calendar. One history puts the earliest date as 14th century BC. I really don't know the answer to that. Can anyone help me out?
